Visit to Borobudur region

Le temple de Borobudur

The Borobudur region of Indonesia is located north of Yogyakarta in the province of Central Java, near the city of Magelang. It is world famous for being home to the Borobudur Temple, a masterpiece of Buddhist architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Borobudur Temple

Borobudur Temple is a vast Buddhist monument located on the island of Java in Indonesia, in Magelang. Built between the 8th and 9th centuries during the Sailendra dynasty, it is often considered the largest Buddhist temple in the world and one of the wonders of religious architecture. The temple is designed in the form of a mandala, a circular diagram symbolizing the universe in Buddhism. It is shaped like a three-tiered pyramid representing three Buddhist worlds: the world of desire (Kamadhatu), the world of forms (Rupadhatu), and the formless world (Arupadhatu).

Mendut Temple

Mendut Candi Mendut Temple is a small but important Buddhist temple located about 3 km east of the famous Borobudur Temple in the Magelang region of Central Java. Although less well known than Borobudur, Mendut plays a key role in the sacred triangle formed with the Pawon and Borobudur temples. Built in the early 9th century, probably during the Sailendra dynasty, which ruled Java and encouraged the rise of Mahayana Buddhism. It predates Borobudur Temple and is believed to have served as a place of spiritual introduction before pilgrims continued to Borobudur. Mendut Temple, although modest in size compared to Borobudur, embodies significant symbolic and architectural richness. It illustrates Central Java's role as a thriving centre of Mahayana Buddhism in medieval Southeast Asia.

These three temples form a sacred triangle, often visited by Buddhist pilgrims. Built around the 9th century, during the Sailendra dynasty, which marked the golden age of Mahayana Buddhism in the region. Although its exact purpose is not fully established, it is often considered to be a shrine to the bodhisattva Vajrapani or a spiritual transition point for pilgrims traveling from Mendut to Borobudur.

Rhema Hill

Rhema Hill (Bukit Rhema) is an iconic and unique destination located near Borobudur in Central Java, Indonesia. It is best known for the Chicken Church (often referred to as the “Chicken Church” or “Gereja Ayam”), an unusual and fascinating building that attracts curious onlookers and those seeking spectacular views. The chicken-shaped building was designed in the 1990s by a man named Daniel Alamsjah, who claims to have had a divine vision that inspired him to build a place of prayer. Although often referred to as the “Chicken Church,” the building was originally intended to resemble a dove (a symbol of peace and faith). The place is not exclusively Christian: it was designed as a space for prayer and meditation open to all faiths and beliefs.
